Rose’s Random Recommendation Roundup #1

Here’s a post where I mention various things that have captured my interest recently. I recommended you check them out!

FILMS I’VE RECENTLY SEEN & LOVED:

The French Dispatch directed by Wes Anderson (streaming on HBO)
An anthology film about a fictional New Yorker-style magazine and its editorial staff. Great acting from an all-star cast, interesting storytelling and art direction. Every shot is a confection!
Bigbug directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet (streaming on Netflix)
A sci-fi comedy about a group of characters who become trapped in a house during the AI apocalypse with a group of robots who attempt unlikely displays of humanity. A beautiful film that is heartwarmingly funny.
Strange Bird directed by Laura Lee Bahr (streaming on YouTube)
A short film written by Laura Lee Bahr and Chris Kelso. I first saw this film last November when the director introduced it as part of an extraordianary film block at the Wonderland Book Awards. And I’m excited now that this treasure is online, you can see it too!

BOOKS & WRITERS I AM CURRENTLY ENJOYING:

Don’t Push The Button by John Skipp (available from CLASH Books)
A heart-wrenchingly honest, unsettling, and humorous story collection from one of my all-time favorite authors. I also picked up a couple of CDs of Skipp’s new music and have been loving it, especially the track Don’t Run When the Devil Comes. Seriously, stop reading this and go listen to it right now!
Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin
Y: The Last Man meets The Girl With All the Gifts. A fresh take on the zombie apocalypse narrative that centers around trans women and men trying to survive a post-apocalypse in which anyone with testosterone above certain levels transforms into a beast.
I enjoyed this piece about water by comedian/writer Rob Auton (skip the beginning and start the video at 5:30). This is my first exposure to this creator, but I feel he’s a kindred spirit and I intend on investigating more of his work.
March is Women’s History Month and that also means an opportunity to spotlight women in the horror genre. John Edward Lawson of Raw Dog Screaming Press started this thread on twitter with some great recommendations.
Winnie the Pooh is now in the public domain. I know a few writers and artists already working on bizarro story concepts exploring the Hundred Acre Wood and I’m intrigued to see what comes of it.

EVENTS I’M PLANNING TO ATTEND:

Eraserhead Press will be attending StokerCon in Denver on May 12-15 and look forward to finally seeing so many of our friends in person. If you are an active HWA member, this is your reminder to cast your final ballot by March 15th.
I’m also working out our plans to attend KillerCon in Austin this August.

OTHER RANDOM STUFF:

I found this interactive typography cheat sheet handy for nerding out and learning the technical names for each part of typeface.
My favorite new thing to cook is roasted cauliflower with chile, garlic and olive oil. I follow this recipe and I use New Mexico red chile powder.
My favorite new purchase for the home are Wiz 60w color-changing programmable smart bulbs (2-pack from Amazon $24.99). They connect to your wifi and are controlled from an app on your phone. This has revolutionized the lightning options in my home.

Thanks for stopping by this blog. I hope you find these recommendations helpful or at least delightful. Let me know if you check any of these out and leave me a comment with your opinions of them.
